Whilst artistically channelling Scorsesse’s Taxi Driver and more defined than Azzarello’s other Before Watchmen title, Comedian, Rorschach #1 cheapens one of the greatest of Alan Moore’s characters with its distinct lack of creativity. Gone is his psychological depth, only to be replaced with pure vigilantism and simplistic narrative, with a good measure of gratuitous sex and violence. The issue whilst spending time in the gutter wallows there. And given the introduction of The Bard, it is unlikely to improve. This is an incredible disappointment, but for Bermejo’s art and its hyperrealism texture. I anxiously await JMS and Hughes’ Dr. Manhattan.
